Message from the Dean
Graduate School of Science of Tokyo Institute of Technology is known for
its high level of research activities in basic sciences. I believe it essential
that the University administration keeps its distance from decisions of
directions of researches but leaves each researcher to pursue his/her own
academic interests, particularly in basic sciences whose goal is not to
seek short-term practical applications. It is nevertheless necessary to
appeal to the general public that we keep very high academic standard,
in order to attract increased support both spiritually as well as practically.
This is one of the important jobs of the University, and I will devote
my efforts to achieve this goal as Dean of School of Science.
Another, probably more important, function of the University is education,
in particular at the undergraduate level. Graduate education is closely
intertwined with cutting-edge researches, but undergraduate counterpart
has its own aspects that need dedicated efforts to be distinguished from
research activities. I will confirm that our faculty members all agree
that education is worth deep devotion and will try to figure out effective
ways to share best methods of education.
I would also like to appeal to our students and prospective students that
School of Science of Tokyo Institute of Technology not just boats its very
high standard of research and education but is always trying to implement
possible improvements. This renders our School worthwhile a big pride,
and I advise that you enjoy your student life both academically and personally
in this privileged environment.
